Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for frying)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons water)

Equipment

Method

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined. Shape into 4 patties.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Sauté for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for 1-2 minutes until thickened.
  5. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy over the top, and let them simmer for 5 minutes. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

Try adding mushrooms to the gravy for extra depth. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
